Sonnet

A sonnet is a poem that has 14 lines and follows a specific rhyme scheme. It comes from the Italian word that means “little song.”

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Limerick

A five-line witty poem with a distinctive rhythm. The first, second and fifth lines, the longer lines, rhyme. The third and fourth shorter lines rhyme. (A-A-B-B-A).

There once was an old man from Crewe
Who never knew quite what to do
he scratched his poor head
and then went to bed
a rat ran away with his shoe

Free Verse

A Free Verse Poem does not follow any rules. Rhyming, syllable count, punctuation, number of lines, number of stanzas, and line formation is completely in their hands.

I was sitting on the sand
Watching the clouds pass by When I saw in the sky a lion and a bear.
I said oh my!
I look on my left ,
I see a white dove fly so high
I started to cry.
I said to myself I must be crazy.
There is no bear or lion in the sky
Maybe a dove and some water below
And other things that we don't know.
